As the life expectance edges up, the level of care needed for those in the latter stages of life increases. A 90-year old person requires much more care than a 60-year old person.

The generation of today's retirees is wealthier and has a desire for independence. This is displayed in their desire to stay at their homes rather than in nursing homes. There is support in state and federal governments to encourage this trend. It is much cheaper to live in ones house than it is to live in a nursing home.
